Fourteen crews are competing in today’s America’s Best Dance Crew Casting Special for a shot to move forward as one of 10 finalists in the competition. We’re now at the halfway mark, and the skill level appears just as tight as last season (uh, with maybe a few exceptions).

We’ll be coming at you every day from Remote Control with exclusive rehearsal pics/video, judges interviews, and insider gossip. Plus, if you have your own questions for anyone who’s part of the show — crews, hosts, producers, ANYONE — all you have to do is put them in the comments section of the daily posts (starting now!) and we’ll get as many as we can answered. We’re cool like that, we’ve got connections.

Stay tuned to Remote Control for a final breakdown of the show finalists

JC Chasez on 'America's Best Dance Crew'

In anticipation of the June 19 second season premiere of Randy Jackson's MTV reality show America’s Best Dance Crew, our Reyhaneh Fathieh chatted with show judge and former 'NSync-er JC Chasez about dance, a boy band reunion, and, of course, famous bandmate Justin Timberlake and his troubled ex-girlfriend Britney Spears. Read more below for the full report on JC, and be sure to catch the show's live casting special tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET on MTV. This season, viewers can vote on which dance crews makes the cut.

A lot of people are calling you the Simon Cowell of the show. I was surprised to find you in that role because you were always the nice, quiet one in 'NSync.
I’m totally nice and quiet. That’s the thing, everybody says I’m mean, but I’ve never said anything mean. It’s just that I’m not going to sit there and say it couldn’t be any better. That’s the way we were in 'NSync. We were always looking to get better, so literally every night after the show we would critique ourselves. We would have our video crew give us a tape of the performance and then we would watch it and critique ourselves. So, when I’m giving critiques, I’m doing it because I want it to be better, but I’m not going to tell somebody something that they can’t do. The only thing I’m going to critique is something that they can do. It’s about reaching your maximum potential. I’m not trying to tear anybody down. I’m trying to bring out the best in them.

It seems to me that dance is becoming more and more important for a performer, like if you’re a straight-up singer you don’t have the full-package. Do you think the emphasis on dance is pulling away from the music?
Not at all. That style has been around for ages. You could say that dance is more important than it was, but I don’t feel that way. I think it might have fallen out of the spotlight for a little while, but it’s always been there. If you wanna go earlier, you can talk about Motown, you know they always had dance routines in all their performances. And you push along to the early days of pop, and the biggest star was a dance performer, Michael Jackson, and then you have Janet Jackson. And then you have Madonna. So I don’t think dance has ever not been prevalent. There’s plenty of artists out today that are huge artists that aren’t dance artists. We seem to be drawn to that aspect a lot. Today’s dance artists, I’d say are between Usher and Justin and Chris Brown and Rihanna. But at no time I would say it was missing.

You wrote and produced for the Backstreet Boys with the track 'Treat Me Right'—what was that like? Was it like crossing into enemy lines?
Not by any means. A.J. (McLean) and I have become friends over a period of time. I met him for coffee one day and we hit it off. At that time he was working on the Backstreet record, so he said, "Listen do you want to write something?" And I said, "That’s up to you man, you’re gonna have to talk to your buddies about that. I’m totally cool for it, I have no beef. I don’t want it to be about egos clashing or people being uncomfortable. I’m not about uncomfortable or confrontational situations." He said, "I’ll talk to them." And when he did, they all gave the thumbs up.

Do you think 'NSync will ever reunite? There have been some impossible reunions, like NKOTB, Led Zeppelin…No, because the thing is, it had its place in time. I know we made a lot of money but we didn’t do it for the money. We did it because it’s what we were passionate about and it’s what we love to do. When we hit the phase where our imagination and our passion started wandering, that’s when we knew it was time to do those things. It’s part of growing. We’re now pursuing the passions that drive us. I’m all for people doing what turns them on as long as they’re not hurting anyone.

Britney and Justin seem to have very similar backgrounds, same kind of childhood, same kind of history leading up to things…
[Interrupts] I totally disagree with that because everybody’s home experience is very different from the next. No two families function exactly the same and no two perspectives are exactly the same. Even if you grow up in the same family, you’re different than your brother and sister. Growing up in the same household, one sister can be the wild child and the brother can be straight-laced. I think individuals experience things differently, so I will never say that people grow up the same, especially if they grew up in different households. And, one, it is issues of being a female and being a male. That’s two different perspectives there. She’s experiencing life as a woman, he’s experiencing life as a man, that’s a vast difference. Snoop Dogg didn’t grow up like Madonna but they’re both artists

"I thought the Jabbawockeez crushed it," JC Chasez said of "America's Best Dance Crew." "That was amazing dude, the way they came out of the ceiling. That, I thought, was great. So were the Pussycat Dolls, they were amazing. [Coldplay] did a phenomenal job, but they're pros. This is, like, their third or fourth record, and they've got it down to a science.

"I also loved seeing 'Wayne's World' again," he added. "That was a very nostalgic moment."

JC Chasez Comments on Lou Pearlman

Earlier this week Lou Pearlman, who is the man behind the “Backstreet Boys” and “N’Sync,” was sentenced to 25 years in the slammer after he pleaded guilty to cheating investors out of more than $300 million dollars. Hollyscoop caught up with JC Chasez at the "Maxim Hot 100 party" in Los Angeles and asked him his thoughts about Pearlman.

“I don’t even know if I have an opinion on it…that was apart of my life that I just have put behind me at this point. I read it, I put it in my mental Rolodex, it’s really behind me."

He added, “some people are happy, it just has no bearing on my life anymore, its not relevant to me anymore.”

Good news for JC is he doesn’t have to worry about bumping into Perv man anytime soon

Killer Movie review

Thanks, Jor for pointing this out. And note there could be some spoiling to the film if you read the review just to say as warning. :)

In 'Killer Movie,' more famous = less time to live

One of the pleasures of Jeff Fisher’s ‘Killer Movie’ is watching the order in which the young, gorgeous characters get picked off. You’ve got Leighton Meester (omg Blair Waldorf from ‘Gossip Girl’), Robert Buckley (omg that stone-cold fox Kirby from ‘Lipstick Jungle’) and even J.C. Chasez (omg Chace Crawford’s boyfriend - kidding!), plus a gaggle of other hotties and hunks.

In some horror movies, the kids die in order of sinfulness, or recklessness, or pure prettiness. In this one, they die in order of… fame!

Chasez is the first to disappear. Okay, he doesn’t die, but he storms off the set of the high school reality show that is the focal point of the movie and is replaced by the less-musical and more-actory Paul Wesley.

Then it’s Leighton’s turn. She’s arguably as famous as JC, but, hey, she was never in a band with Justin Timberlake. We asked her to describe her character. ‘I mean, I don’t want to give away too much,’ she said. ‘She is… not long for this world?’

Four words: Worst. Motorbike. Ride. Ever.

Buckley gets more breathing time. His gory end is buried somewhere in the middle of the flick, even after the frigid cheerleading coach (Jennifer Murphy, a former Miss Oregon) has an ‘accident’ in wood shop. (‘That was actually a real table saw,’ she told us.) But then again, Robert made this movie long before the ladies of NBC and the world were gasping over his flawless torso.

Which - spoiler alert! - is right where he gets it.

JC Chasez: “I missed Justin”

Even though ’NSync won’t be getting back together any time soon, ex-bandmates Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez still want to make music. “We missed each other and so we went back into the studio and had a good time,” JC, 31, told In Touch at the Details magazine Mavericks party in Beverly Hills on March 20. The songs may be for JC’s solo album but it doesn’t look like we’ll hear them anytime soon. “When the right group of music comes together for me, I probably will release something,” says JC. JC would love to be signed to Justin’s record label.

JC Chasez tells it straight about being a TV judge

JC Chasez tells it straight about being a TV judge

By THERESA TAYLER, SUN MEDIA

This just in -- JC Chasez is not gay.

A disappointing conclusion for gossip girls and boys around the globe who heard all about it on the nasty blogs: The 'N Sync alum has been spotted pool side, club side, and hotel side with Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford.

Chasez says, don't believe the tabloids, he's as straight as a plank.

The former boy band member addressed the rumour mill on U.S. radio station, Kiss FM 104.7, Wednesday morning.

"You know what, it's stupid, for the record we're both straight, we're not dating ... The fact of the matter is we don't even hang out that much, we're friends, he's a super nice guy and he's a friend of mine," Chasez told the DJ.

As Chasez explained to Sun Media, he's just really into dancing, singing, and French electro-pop -- and people can draw their own conclusions.

The guy has more ex drool-worthy girlfriends -- including one of the Desperate Housewives Eva Longoria -- than Tara Reid has boyfriends, and come to think of it, Chasez dated her too.

With all the media blitz about Chasez's love life, details regarding his music and TV career seem to be overlooked of late.

But Chasez says he is still in sync with his musical side and he is planning to release solo album number two later this year, an album that will include several collaborations with former bandmember and uber pop star Justin Timberlake, as well has hip hop producer/musician Timberland.

"An intelligent pop record, I just want to make a pop record that hasn't been dumbed down," Chasez says.

His first solo project, Schizophrenic, was released in 2004 to favourable reviews.

"I think the French house music scene is where the future of music really is, there's amazing stuff happening there -- Justice, Daft Punk -- stuff like that," Chasez says.

Everything was going along swimmingly in the studio until he got sidetracked with project number two, a spot as a judge on Randy Jackson Presents: America's Best Dance Crew -- a role Chasez says fits him like a glove.

"My focus right now is the show, and the music when we're done shooting," he says.

The former Mickey Mouse Club cast member was dancing long before he started to sing.

"I was like twelve years old, it was the MC Hammer records and stuff, that's what I was emulating," Chasez says while laughing.

America's Best Dance Crew features street-dance crews from around the U.S. and it's hosted by Mario Lopez.

Chasez is known as the compassionate judge in comparison to fellow judges Lil Mama (rapper) and choreographer Shane Sparks.

"I've enjoyed every performance. My job is to help them (each crew) get better," he says. "I know how hard they're working, it shows on the show."

America's Best Dance Crew's season finale airs this Sunday on MuchMusic. And MTV in the U.S. has renewed the show for a second season.

In the meantime, Chasez will be working hard on his music and trying to keep his love life out of the media spotlight.
